“SHE, WHO COULD HAVE BEEN ME” This exhibition is based on the premise that we, as women in this time in history, in this part of the world, in this life that we have been born into – are incredibly lucky compared to an untold number of women in other ages, places, other circumstances. In response to this realisation one of the artists in our collective, Roisin Duffy wrote the following poem, which became the starting point for the exhibition, in particular the title and the first verse. She, who could have been me. I, lucky I, live the life she could have had, if not for accidents of birth, and circumstance – and pure blind luck. Her hardship hers, and mine mostly minor in comparison, one endures and one enjoys – and one, could have been either. If I, had been her, born of her time and place, I would not have had my blessings, counted on many fingers – fortunate am I. And if she, had been me, with all my privilege, and fate had left me hardship, would I bear her crosses stoically - like she, who could have been me. Dice – thrown - decided, one for her and one for me, and put us in our place, and time, and circumstance – and made us her - and me. The ‘She’ who features in the work of each of the five Croí 8 artists is the woman that each of us could have been, had our circumstances, our luck, our decisions, or any of the other deciding factors that occur in a life, been any different than they are.
